Today, Adam Wells with GSTVC shares with us how the GST team implements best practices in Product Development.
Improving Product Development: Version Strategy (Part 2)
Supporting multiple versions with different development groups can be a hefty burden. The consequences of spinning all these plates can have widespread impact throughout your company.
So what strategy should you employ, because...well-the plate-spinning is unavoidable. And what can be done tactically to stay on target?
To start, Strategically you want to protect your most senior resources from being pulled in a dozen directions; this will prevent your most expensive and vital assets' productivity from grinding to a halt.
How do you accomplish this? You're thinking 'this is an Ivory Tower outlook.' ...easier said than done sort of thing. Tactically you need to foster a culture of Readiness within your R&D group in order to prevent the tripping forward of last minute impediment solving.
Business will always be moving at 80 mph, but you can create more space between you and the 'car' in front of you; this will give you better vision and more time to react to the inevitable blockers.
Readiness will allow your Dev Leaders to proactively address issues within their own timing and daily/weekly rhythms.
GST has a long track record of stepping into complex technological and operational problems to create space and time, resulting in smoother outcomes.
